Fire Evacuation
If you don’t have a fire extinguisher consider getting one and learn how to use it. When the
emergency happens is not the time to learn.
Make a plan and review with your family on how to evacuate from your house in case of fire.
What if you were upstairs and can’t get down the stairs to get out the door? Consider alternate
egress options. Is there a window from where you can get to the lower roof to get down?
Perhaps with some kind of rope ladder to hang on the window to climb down. When you get
out do you have a planned meeting place, so in all the confusion family members will quickly
know if anyone is missing.
What about a tornado? Does your family know where to go in the house to be safe?
Have you thought of a place you would go if you had to evacuate from your house for several
days? Do you have a planned meeting place if you and your family members are unable to
return to your home and cell phone service is not available?
What can we learn from other real-life cases? For example, what can we learn from the recent
very cold winter weather recently experienced by the people of Texas? With no electricity they
had no heat, pipes froze, no internet, cell phones could not be charged, etc. If that happened
here, which it could, would you be able to handle it better?
We invite you to take time to make emergency plans and to identify circumstance that would
either have you stay in your home or evacuate to a safer location.
